Richard Osman dropped a new one with a bang, but… We Solve Murders – Review

Anyone who knows me and my love for murder mysteries and crime fiction knows that I’m a huge fan of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series. I’ve been talking about it ever since I first read the books. So, when I heard that he was introducing a new set of sleuths in a new series, I was beyond excited. But, as always, I felt a little nervous picking up “We Solve Murders” —what if I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had the earlier ones?
Richard Osman dropped a new one with a bang, but…
Given how high Richard Osman set the bar with The Thursday Murder Club, expectations for his new series were naturally elevated. Fortunately, the first book, We Solve Murders, does not disappoint.
I listened to the audiobook version, produced by Penguin Audio and narrated by Nikola Walker. Walker’s performance brought the characters to life—Amy, Steve Wheeler, Rosie D’Antonio, Trouble the stray cat, and the rest of the gang were all vividly portrayed.
The story is engaging and captivating, though there were moments when the plot lost a bit of its grip at times, catching you again with the next plot twist. A few characters felt a bit superfluous, and their presence could have been reduced without harming the story.

Should you read it?
Overall, I’m eager to see where the series goes next. The ending leaves us with a cliffhanger—our protagonists receive a call about another murder, leaving us eager to find out if they can solve it.
As Rosie D’Antonio said, “We Solve Murders is indeed a good title for a book!

I also thought the book had too many lose ends…what happens to the Golf Caddy with red pony tail? I liked the Library cameo..and the name of the firm is very MI5..instead of MIS! ..the chatGpt..on audio did get a tad annoying..and the reveal was interstellar especially the Sauna scene…so, it wasn’t just an ok read.
I have read ‘The Thursday Murder Club ” By Richard Osman but I found it a very slow read ( maybe in pace with the senior citizens who form the core of the mystery solvers), I managed to complete it only through will power so I am relieved to learn that “We solve murders ” is a good read. Have you read ‘The Thursday Murder Club”?
I have read all the books of Thursday Murder Club and loved it. You are the first one who said you didn’t like it. Everyone else who had read it and talked with me have enjoyed the series. Hope you enjoy We Solve Murders if you pick it up.
This was such a fun and intriguing read! I love how you captured the thrill of solving mysteries—it made me feel like I was part of a detective team myself. The way you highlighted the excitement of piecing together clues reminded me why I enjoy crime fiction so much. Your enthusiasm for the genre really shines through, making this post even more engaging. Now I’m itching to pick up a good whodunit! 😊
I love crime thrillers. And since I haven’t read any of Richard Osman’s books, this seems like a good one to begin. Certainly going to get it.
If you are into audiobooks, I would recommend listening to the audibook versions of Thursday Murder Club series! The experience is amazing
I like audio books. Thanks for the suggestion
Your review is bang on but I will let this pass. Thrillers and murder mysteries are not on my reading list anymore. Life has thrown me into so many thrillers that now I stick to romcoms only.
I’ve read very few murder mysteries, though I enjoy watching them for their fast pace. However, your review highlighting the story’s twists makes it sound engaging. I might give The Thursday Murder Club a try—it seems intriguing.
I am surprised that you are not into crime fiction! I have heard that Bengalis are very serious about their detectives may it be Feluda, Byomkesh or any other from the plethora of them! If you are into audiobooks, I would recommend listening to the audiobook versions of Thursday Murder Club series! The experience is amazing
I have read and watched Byomkesh and a few others but haven’t explored much beyond that. My taste in books is quite varied and may not align with typical Bengali traits—just like I’m not much of a singer and don’t have a strong preference for non-veg food 😅. Yes this year I have started exploring audiobooks and am getting ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ right away. I’ll definitely share my experience once I dive into it!
I liked the honest review and the writing style But I’m not too much into thrillers, so I think I will let this one pass.
I am in immense love with murder mystery and I found always that my brain works better when I read such books as it makes me think. I have read multiple authors writing murder mysteries and after reading ur review I am not going to miss this too. Thanks for the recommendation… The sequel alert u gave at the end actually make my decision firm to read it as I love detectives with sequel stories.
I love a good murder mystery, and Richard Osman never fails to deliver! Even with a few weak spots, this one sounds like a fun read.
I didn’t read any of his book. I love suspense and murder mystery too. Your honest review intriguing. Will definitely check out and on my reading list – Richard Osman.
I love discovering new thriller books and authors. Richard Osman goes into my TBR, thanks to your honest but fairly happy review. I’m sure his books will not disappoint.
I loved reading your review! As a fellow fan of Richard Osman, I totally get the excitement mixed with a bit of nervousness. The way you described the audiobook performance really caught my attention!
Give it a try for audiobook next time. I am looking forward to the Thursday Murder Club movie franchise also!
I totally get your excitement and nerves when picking up a new Richard Osman book. The audiobook sounds like a great way to experience it, especially with Nikola Walker’s narration bringing the characters to life. I agree, sometimes it’s hard to keep the grip of the plot when there are too many characters, but it sounds like the twists definitely make up for it.
The title sounds really interesting! I love murder mysteries! I have to read any by Richard Osman so I might start with this book .
3.25 doesn’t seem to be a very motivating read for me to check out the book, tbh. But since you’ve raved so highly about the author’s previous series, I’m definitely gonna check that one out.
This sounds very interesting and the Thursday Murder Club series even more. I will do some more research into them and hope to buy. Love this genre!
I have read his Thursday Murders . Crime thrillers are always a safe bet to fall back upon .
I like a story that’s neatly wrapped with a bow and gives closure. Alas, this trend of sequels makes authors leave it on cliffhangers. That said, I can never say no to a thrilling murder mystery. Seems like you like this work. Will check this out.
Crime thriller is an interesting genre . I haven’t read any books of this author though. But I liked the blurb here.
